Billy Dunn is a young boy from Weymouth, MA who until last October was living the life of a normal kid. He was full of energy, loved playing sports, and enjoyed spending time with his 6th grade classmates. Everything changed in an instant when Billy fell on the stairs at home and hit his head.
Billy’s parents took him to the hospital and he was diagnosed with a severe concussion. Unfortunately, his symptoms increased in severity and Billy was admitted to Boston Children’s Hospital where was diagnosed with Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and Persistent Postural-Perceptual Dizziness (PPPD). After continuing his treatment and evaluation at Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital, he returned home.
Complications continued to mount for Billy, including the severe loss of memory, speech, and motor skills. This spring, Billy and his family traveled to Kennedy Krieger Institute in Baltimore, Maryland to see if he would qualify for a specialized program. The Institute is the world’s premier institution dedicated to improving the lives of children and young adults with care and research focused on pediatric developmental disabilities and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and musculoskeletal system.
Thankfully, Billy qualified and he returned to the Institute for a multi-week treatment program. He recently returned home to Weymouth after completing the program and while he made some notable improvements, the road ahead remains arduous. Billy’s speech is limited, his memory loss remains severe, and unfortunately, he still cannot walk on his own.
Hope Strengthens Foundation is privileged to assist with Billy’s care. Recently, we covered expenses related to occupational, physical, and speech therapy. In addition, we supported out-of-pocket transportation and other expenses associated with the family’s frequent trips to Baltimore for Billy’s participation in the program at Kennedy Krieger Institute.
