Helping John Walk Again

Sep 18, 2024 | News & Events

Last year, John McDermott was finalizing preparations to host his extended family for Thanksgiving. While blowing leaves in his yard Thanksgiving eve, he was shockingly struck by a car. John received emergency life support at Lawrence General Hospital and was soon transported to the trauma unit at Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Multiple surgeries followed as John suffered significant trauma, including a spinal cord injury and multiple compound fractures in each leg, rendering him unable to walk. Despite such daunting challenges, John’s positive attitude and determination to walk again has been nothing short of inspirational. Many organizations and community members have generously stepped up to support John and his family during this difficult time.

The road in front of John remains a long and expensive one. According to the Christopher Reeves Foundation, the average first year expenses attributable to spinal cord injuries like John’s are nearly $1 million. It’s why Hope Strengthens Foundation (HSF) has joined the army of support surrounding John as he continues to battle back.

Currently, John is working with Journey Forward and Project Walk, organizations dedicated to bettering the lives of those with spinal cord injuries. Unfortunately, insurance does not cover these services. HSF has committed to deliver support with expenses associated with John’s rehabilitation programs and we are also sharing his story with you to raise additional awareness and financial assistance.

It costs $130 to cover 1-hour of John’s rehabilitation training. This neural stimulation, load bearing, and gait training will help give him the best shot possible at walking again.
